Fan Series 03: Starship Exeter

Before Star Trek Continues or Phase II, there was Starship Exeter, a trailblazing fan-made series that helped ignite the modern Trek fan production movement. Released in two parts between 2002 and 2005, Exeter was one of the first attempts to recreate the Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS) aesthetic with original characters aboard a different Constitution-class starship, the USS Exeter. The series’ modest success laid critical groundwork for future fan productions.

The first episode, “The Savage Empire,” introduces Captain John Garrovick and his crew—an all-new ensemble not based on any established TOS characters. The ship itself, the Exeter, was canonically referenced in the TOS episode “The Omega Glory” as a vessel that had been found adrift, its crew dead. Starship Exeter cleverly used this loose connection to ground itself in Trek lore without altering established canon.

The second and final episode, “The Tressaurian Intersection,” demonstrated a notable leap in production quality. Visual effects, lighting, sound mixing, and pacing were all elevated compared to the first installment. The episode, which took several years to complete, is often praised for its thrilling space combat and emotional storytelling. It captures the danger and wonder of classic Trek while staying true to its DIY fan-film roots.

What made Starship Exeter so important was not just its content but its timing. It premiered just as broadband internet became widespread enough to allow downloadable video—an innovation that made it accessible to fans across the globe. It showed that amateur filmmakers with passion and limited resources could credibly tell Star Trek stories. Its release predated YouTube, but the episode files were passed along on forums and Trek fan sites, generating grassroots buzz.

The series’ legacy is one of influence more than volume. Despite producing only two episodes, Starship Exeter proved the viability of serious fan films and inspired other fan creators to take the plunge. It helped establish the visual vocabulary and standards many later fan series would strive to match.

Few characters in Star Trek history have caused as much chaos with so few intentions of doing harm as Cyrano Jones.
