Fan Series 01: Star Trek Continues

Star Trek Continues, a fan-made web series running from 2013 to 2017, set out to do something audacious—complete the five-year mission of the original Star Trek series. Led by Vic Mignogna, the show meticulously recreated the sets, sound, cinematography, and tone of the 1960s production. Its dedication to authenticity was so precise that it filmed in 4:3 aspect ratio and used original blueprint designs for props and sets.

What made this series truly remarkable was how it honored the spirit of The Original Series without veering into parody or revisionism. Each of its eleven full episodes captured the moral complexity and human optimism that defined Star Trek’s golden age. Episodes like “Fairest of Them All,” a sequel to “Mirror, Mirror,” and “What Ships Are For,” which tackled social allegory, demonstrated the writers’ deep understanding of Star Trek's core values. These episodes weren't just callbacks—they were thoughtful, original contributions to the Trek ethos.

Reception from the fan community was overwhelmingly positive. Many longtime Trekkies considered it the best fan production ever made, with some even arguing it deserved semi-canonical status. Rod Roddenberry himself offered praise, saying it honored the spirit of his father's vision. The show earned several Telly Awards, a Webby Award, and accolades from indie film circles—all while staying within CBS’s non-commercial guidelines.

Unlike many fan productions, Star Trek Continues didn’t just mimic—it evolved. It used its final episodes to transition the crew from the TOS era into the world of The Motion Picture, completing the character arcs of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy in a way many fans felt the original never had a chance to.
