Failed Star Trek Series 01: Assignment: Earth

Back in the second season of Star Trek: The Original Series, the episode “Assignment: Earth” introduced Gary Seven, a time‑travelling agent, his shapeshifting cat Isis, and secretary Roberta Lincoln. It was intended to be a backdoor pilot for a new show centered on Seven protecting Earth’s timeline against alien interference. The premise differed sharply from starship exploration—it combined sci‑fi with spy fiction and 20th‑century Earth settings. Despite network interest, TOS was renewed for its third season, and the proposed spin‑off was abandoned .

The concept offered enormous potential: Gary Seven’s missions could range from clandestine interventions during historical events to covert battles against alien subversion, all without the starship constraints. But critics worried it lacked the Trek flavor of diverse alien worlds, and Roddenberry moved on to TOS directly. Though Gary Seven and Isis never returned on screen, they remain fixture in tie‑in novels and comics. The episode serves as a fascinating example of early Star Trek branching into alternate genres—yet never materializing.
