Star Trek Creature Feature, Article 7: Klingon Targs – Warrior Pets and Hunting Beasts

If the Vulcans have their sehlats and Earth has its dogs, the Klingons have the targ—a muscular, tusked, boar-like creature that's as much a symbol of Klingon strength as it is a cuddly (okay, Klingon-cuddly) childhood memory. Targs aren’t just monsters or wild animals. They’re integrated into Klingon life: hunted, revered, and even loved.

They’ve appeared throughout Star Trek canon in both serious and comedic ways, and they give us a rare peek into the personal, even sentimental, side of Klingon culture.

Planet of Origin

Qo’noS (pronounced Kronos) – the Klingon homeworld, a rough, volatile planet with thick forests, lava plains, and wild terrain. Targs evolved here, probably as herd beasts, but they’re now domesticated in some areas and hunted in others.

Gender and Procreation

Targs reproduce sexually and likely give birth to live young, much like Earth mammals. Male and female targs are referenced in some non-canon sources and RPGs. Klingon breeding programs (yes, those exist!) sometimes focus on battle-targs, which are larger and more aggressive.

Lifespan

Exact numbers vary, but most sources suggest a lifespan of 10–15 years, depending on whether it’s a domestic pet, a battle-targ, or wild. They're hardy animals, well-adapted to the extreme environments of Qo’noS.

Personality and Temperament

Domesticated targs can be loyal, affectionate, and even playful—Worf famously had one as a child and spoke of it fondly. But wild targs? Totally different story. They’re aggressive, territorial, and dangerous when provoked.

They’re basically Klingon pit bulls with tusks.

Offensive and Defensive Capabilities

Offensive: Razor-sharp tusks, Powerful charging speed, Jaw strength for biting, Trained to attack if raised for war or sport

Defensive: Thick hide, Keen hearing and smell, Will fight even when wounded, Targs can be used in hunting, battle sports, or even as watchdogs on Klingon ships.

Diet and Predator Status

Targs are omnivores, but prefer meat-heavy diets—raw or cooked. Klingons sometimes feed them leftovers from the table or battlefield. (You read that right.)

They are predators, though some species may be more scavenger-like. Wild targs hunt in forested areas and are at the top of their food chain on Qo’noS—though Klingons are their only real predators.

Natural Enemies

Other Klingon apex predators, perhaps. But with the rise of Klingon civilization, humans, Klingons, and other warrior species are their biggest threat—either as hunters or poachers.

They are also sometimes targeted in Klingon rituals or battles-for-honor.

Procreation Habits

Targs likely breed seasonally, with litters of 2–4 young per gestation cycle. Domesticated ones are sometimes bred for temperament or battle-readiness. Klingon culture doesn’t romanticize pet breeding—but for prized targs, they’ll make exceptions.

Young targs can be raised as family companions, trained from birth to respond to commands and protect their owners.

Body Size and Mode of Mobility

Targs are quadrupeds, walking on four muscular legs. Their body is low and stocky, with large tusks, armored-looking skin, and a bristly ridge of hair. Size varies:

Wild targs: ~3–4 feet tall, ~400–600 pounds

Battle targs: Can be larger, up to 800 pounds

They move like charging boars, fast over short distances but sturdy and tough as tanks.
